Fire last week in Gates led to Charter outage Tuesday

A fiber optic cable scheduled for repair after being damaged by a structure fire in Gates County last week failed on Tuesday and caused the outage of Charter services on the Outer Banks.

“We scheduled a time to make repairs (and) planned to repair it during the overnight hours, when we do most maintenance,” said Charter spokesperson Scott Pryzwansky.

Tropical Storm Hermine led to postponement of the repair, but the cable along Willeyton Road northeast of Gates failed before crews could get it fixed, according to Pryzwansky.

The outage impacted internet and television service for Charter customers in Dare County, the Currituck Outer Banks and all of Gates County for over five hours Tuesday afternoon.
