UPDATE: Fiber optic cable cut caused overnight AT&T outage

By on November 9, 2015

AT&T says another company’s fiber optic cable was cut Sunday, causing an outage that lasted until this morning.

Wireless customers on the Outer Banks and across much of northeastern North Carolina were without service starting Sunday evening.

“Some customers in the Outer Banks area may have experienced trouble with their wireless service due to a fiber cut in another company’s network yesterday. Technicians repaired the damage and restored service early this morning. We apologize for this inconvenience,” the company said in a statement this morning.

The outage was first reported on the Outer Banks around 5:30 p.m., and was affecting calls and data for AT&T Wireless customers. Customers in Elizabeth City said they had no service as early as 3:30 p.m.

Some said they were told by customer service representatives the outage could last up until Monday evening, although it appeared that most were back online overnight.
