A man from Roanoke Island was killed when two boats collided Saturday evening on the western side of the Roanoke Sound near a popular gathering spot.

Danuel Elwood Midgett Jr., 25, of Manteo, died in the collision off what is known as Banana Island, a long sandbar that juts out into the sound on the northeast corner of Roanoke Island.

Two people were on each vessel at the time of the collision, and one other person suffered serious injuries. The investigation by N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement continues.

This is the second fatal boating accident in northeastern North Carolina waters in the span of seven days. A Virginia couple was killed May 9 when two boats collided in the Chowan River off Gates County.
