A sport-utility vehicle burst into flames Saturday afternoon on the eastbound Wright Memorial Bridge, bringing traffic to a halt.

The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. about halfway across the 2.8-mile-long span, and fire crews arrived at 1:40 p.m.

There were no injuries, and no structural damage to the bridge was reported.

Although the vehicle had been removed from the scene about an hour after the incident began, traffic was backed up seven miles to the Powells Point post office at 3 p.m.

Google Traffic estimated the trip would take 90 minutes to reach the Barlow Lane intersection in Kitty Hawk.
