A 12-year-old boy from Fredericksburg, Va. was struck by a car Thursday evening while trying to cross the U.S. 64 causeway in Nags Head.

Nags Head Police Chief Kevin Brinkley said the boy and his father were in the crosswalk at the Melvin Daniels Bridge, commonly known as the Little Bridge, when he was struck around 6:30 p.m. by a car driven by a 23-year-old Wanchese woman.

The child was treated by Dare County EMS for serious injuries and flown to a hospital in Norfolk. His current condition was unknown, according to Brinkley.

The driver was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to yield to the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
