At $25, they’re a lot cheaper, but more importantly, they’re available now.

With the Cape Hatteras National Seashore closed, interest in Nags Head’s beach driving permits has surged this week.

“They were lined up before we opened to get their permits,” Town Manager Cliff Ogburn told the Board of Commissioners Wednesday.

Ramps onto seashore beaches were barricaded again Thursday as the federal government remained in limbo over the budget standoff in Washington.

Most would argue that fishing is better along Hatteras Island during the fall season. Still, getting there by truck, even if you could, is much more expensive. An annual off-road driving permit is $120, with weeklong permits going for $50 each.

The three offices that provide them are closed anyway.

Kill Devil Hills does not require a permit to drive on the beach from Oct. 1 to April 30, but it can get tricky in narrow areas when the surf is high and the wind is blowing off the ocean.

Nags Head added sand to 10 miles of its beaches in 2011, so there’s usually plenty of room until you start heading north of the Nags Head Fishing Pier. Beach driving is allowed in the off season from Oct. 1 to April 30 there as well.

Near the end of the day Wednesday, Nags Head had sold 143 permits compared to 118 at the same time last year, said Becky Huff, the town’s tax collector.

Permits are sold at Nags Head Town Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., TW’s Bait and Tackle from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Whalebone Tackle from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fishing Unlimited from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the office at Jeanette’s Pier from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

“We have definitely had an increase in phone calls concerning the beach driving permits this year also,” she wrote in an e-mail.
