Non-profit children’s museum opens in Kitty Hawk

The Outer Banks Children at Play Museum opened this week at milepost 4.5 in Kitty Hawk. Kids can learn about aviation, boating, fishing and measuring their catch of the day, lighthouses and life saving, exploring under the sea, shopping for groceries at the market and running a deli.

St. Andrews launches Monday family fish fry

Each Monday in July, locals and visitors can experience a feature of southern, coastal lifestyle. “Old Nags Head Family Fish Fry” will be held each Monday in July, starting July 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church. Fresh seafood will be offered, and participants can dine in or get plates to go.

Coastland Times publisher Francis Meekins dies

Francis Warren Meekins Sr., editor and publisher of The Coastland Times, died Wednesday at his home in Sunnyside on Roanoke Island. A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday.

Bebop’s Multi-Use Pier to be dedicated

A new public pier in Manns Harbor will be dedicated in honor of Betty Dean “Bebop” Fearing with a ribbon cutting June 21. Bebop’s Multi-Use Pier at the west entrance to the William B. Umstead Bridge will open to the public following the 2 p.m. ribbon cutting. It includes wheelchair accessible positions for fishing and recreation.

Four receive diplomas at Ocracoke graduation

Ocracoke School can probably lay claim to having the smallest graduating class in North Carolina this year. In a commencement ceremony on Sunday evening, June 13, four seniors at the school, which includes kindergarten through 12th grade, received their diplomas.
