Forecasters say high wind this afternoon and this evening could deliver gusts of up to 50 mph from a coastal storm that will head to sea overnight.
Rain is probable, the National Weather Service said, and waves are expected to reach 10 to 15 feet. High water on the sounds could also cause some minor flooding along the Pamlico Sound as the wind shifts from the north and northwest overnight.
High tide tonight could bring some ocean overwash along N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island, according to the forecast.
North winds will run between 34 and 39 mph with possible gusts of 50 mph before settling down after midnight.
Coastal flood, wind and surf advisories have been posted here.
Things will quickly calm down Saturday morning to make way for a sunny and breezy afternoon with highs around 55 degrees.
