Home in Kill Devil Hills suffers heavy fire damage

By on February 18, 2014

Fire heavily damaged a home Tuesday afternoon in the 500 block of Quail Lane in the Ocean Acres neighborhood in Kill Devil Hills.

Original calls from Dare County dispatch described the structure as fully involved and smoke from the scene was visible as far away as Roanoke Island and the Manteo-Nags Head causeway.

Law enforcement officials said the house was not occupied at the time. Neighbors saw flames, reported the fire and were able to lead two dogs inside the house to safety.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters and no damage to adjacent homes at the end of Quail Lane and adjacent to Nags Head Woods.

The tight configuration on the street complicated set-up to fight the fire, but within about 30 minutes the conflagration was brought mostly under control.

Some flames reignited from the roof at the rear of the house and firefighters quickly moved to that location to douse the flames.

Firefighters could be seen on the third floor of the structure while heavy smoke and some flames were present, adding drama to the scene and highlighting the risks firefighters take insuring there were no other people in the structure.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
