smallcgchopperSeven people were rescued Wednesday from a sinking boat in Diamond Shoals.

The Coast Guard said the boaters called at about 4:30 p.m. to report that the 26-foot Going Deep was taking on water.

Two Coast Guard boats and a helicopter were sent to the area about 14 miles east of Cape Hatteras while the merchant vessel Diamond Lady changed course to stand by and provide updates, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Six people were taken aboard a 25-foot response boat from the Coast Guard station at Hatteras Inlet Inlet. Petty Officer 1st Class Mark Burgoa, the response boat’s engineer, boarded the Going Deep and helped the owner bail out water.

They bailed for about 30 minutes until the Coast Guard’s 47-foot motor life boat arrived to tow the Going Deep to Teach’s Lair Marina in Hatteras.

No one was hurt.
