An equipment failure is being blamed for a power outage Wednesday afternoon affecting Roanoke Island, South Nags Head and Manns Harbor.

Around 6,000 customers of Dominion Power and Tideland Electric Co-Op have been impacted by the blackout that started around 4:30 p.m.

A problem with the cables running under the Roanoke Sound between Nags Head and Manteo caused the outage, according to Dominion.

In an automated message to customers, Dominion North Carolina said they estimate power will be fully restored by 1 a.m.

Power crews working adjacent to the eastern landing the Washington Baum Bridge told the Voice they do not know the exact cause of the problem.

“Crews are making temporary repairs to get everyone back on as quickly as possible,” the company said on their Facebook page.

“Work will continue to make permanent repairs to the cables. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience,” according to the status update.
