An early morning fire Sunday burned two oceanfront houses to the ground in Carova Beach, while firefighters saved a third from damage.

Units from the Carova Beach, Corolla and Duck fire departments and Currituck EMS responded at about 4:45 a.m. to a fire at Currituck milepost 22, Currituck Fire and EMS Chief Robert Glover said in an e-mail.

A witness said the fire started at 2197 Sandfiddler Drive, then spread next door to 2195 Sandfiddler Drive, destroying both houses.

A third home, 2193 Sandfiddler Drive, was evacuated but was not damaged, according to Glover.

Firefighters were able to spare the house south of the two that burned (courtesy OregonInletIdiots.com).

The fires occurred in the four-wheel drive area of the Currituck Outer Banks.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is not known, Glover said.

This is a developing story, and we will have more details as they become available.
