A portion of the Outer Banks has been named again as one of the top beaches in the country by a respected coastal scientist.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman from Florida International University, known as Dr. Beach, lists Cape Hatteras as the 8th best in his annual top 10.

“Bulging far offshore of the mainland coast as a barrier island, Cape Hatteras was the first National Seashore,” a summary on his website said. “Providing some of the best board surfing along the East Coast, as well as the most famous lighthouse in the United States, Cape Hatteras attracts beachgoers to its historic fishing villages.

“Nature lovers adore the excellent beachcombing and superb fishing.”

East Hampton on Long Island, N.Y., was named number one this year.

Dr. Beach tabbed the lifeguard beach at Ocracoke as number one in 2007, which retired it from eligibility for his annual rankings.
