Controlled burn in Nags Head Woods postponed

By on March 17, 2013

A controlled burn planned Monday in the Kill Devil Hills section of Nags Head Woods, with about 20 acres scheduled for the prescribed fire, has been postponed.

A total of 60 acres of private and Nature Conservancy-owned land will be burned this year to provide a larger fuel buffer between neighborhoods in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head and the Nags Head Woods.

Similar burns last year of 200 acres of marsh removed fuel and increased the fuel buffer zone to prevent wildfires and remove unwanted shrubs to improve wildlife habitat.

Areas in red are scheduled for burning in the coming weeks (submitted image).
