At one point, the driver of the Dodge pickup sped through a Highway Patrol checkpoint on Colington Road, almost hitting a state police trooper, according to Kill Devil Hills police. That happened at about 9:15 p.m.
The truck had been left in the parking lot, unlocked with the keys inside.
Arrested and charged with 13 offenses by the state Highway Patrol was Tyler Joseph Franz. Franz was the only person injured in the crash into the unoccupied house.
A subsequent investigation also connected Franz to the theft of a 2001 Ford Explorer from the parking lot of Spring Arbor assisted living. The driver of the stolen truck drove so recklessly that two people called 911 to complain, KDH police said in a statement.
That truck as later found abandoned near Walker Street.
Franz was being held at the Dare County Detention Center under a $21,000 secured bond.
More charges will be submitted to a grand jury for possible indictment, the statement said.
