To give vendors more time to deliver essential goods to Ocracoke, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is temporarily adjusting several departure times on the Swan Quarter route.
Starting Thursday, Jan. 24, ferries will depart Swan Quarter at 9:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Vessels will leave Ocracoke at 6:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The adjustments are being made to the 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. departures from Ocracoke and the 10 a.m. departure from Swan Quarter.
“The division is monitoring traffic and will make additional changes if needed,” said Lucy Wallace, ferry division communications officer.
Residents of Ocracoke and vendors are being given toll exempt status until the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry resumes operations.
The Hatteras Inlet route was shut down Jan. 18 until further notice, due to the ferry channel at markers #9 and #10 becoming completely shoaled over and impassable.
Dredging of Rollinson Channel by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is continuing, but it could be several weeks before the shoaling problems are fixed.
