Before a full house of family, friends, co-workers, representatives of area law enforcement agencies and well-wishers, Joel C. Johnson was sworn in Monday as chief the Kitty Hawk Police Department.

Johnson is the fourth chief since the creation of the police department in 1983 and has been with the department since 1999.

He began his career in law enforcement as a patrol officer with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and since has obtained a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. As a member of the Kitty Hawk Police Department, he graduated from the FBI’s National Academy.

Johnson takes over for David Ward, who retired on Dec. 31 after 22 years of service to the town.
