Security exercise Wednesday on Currituck ferry
Agencies participating include the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Transportation Security Administration VIPR Team, Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, Currituck County Emergency Management, U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, and crews of the M/V Gov. James B. Hunt Jr., according to a news release.
The exercise is designed to enhance security at the Currituck and Knotts Island ferry terminals, the release says, by having local and federal agencies working together to supplement existing security resources.
The program has been implemented across the nation over the last few years, according to the statement.
The exercise is expected to start at 6 a.m. and last until about 6:30 p.m, and ferry service on the Currituck Sound route will not be interrupted.
A similar exercise was conducted in July on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route.

It’s called… “make it look like were doing something so we will be included in the next budget cycle”. It’s DHS which needs to show us how important they are by having these exercises annually. It holds up traffic and provides the curious with fodder for conversation. But does give emergency responders a chance to meet and talk about how to deal with a true emergent situation. NOT !

I know the average person thinks the boogieman is around every corner but if you want security, go to prison. Me, I like my freedom and don’t want a government that can’t, nor won’t protect you, in my everyday life. You have a better chance of being killed by a champagne cork or a honey bee than a terrorist.

Imo, a complete waste of taxpayer dollars. Daily Advance quotes ferry master stating he is normally by himself. For the drill, we have national, state, local on an on. And the target is? A ferry that moves a few people from a rural area to another rural area across a few miles of low depth water in a non-commercial waterway. Right, that is surely a major target with potential to inflict massive disruption.
And the state/fed is having budget problems?
Who ordered this?
