Regional unemployment was up slightly in June

The number of unemployment claims went up in 10 of the region’s 15 counties in June, reflecting a statewide trend for the month.

The average jobless rate in northeastern North Carlina increased by 0.2 percent from May to June to 9.9 percent, 0.2 percent less than the statewide average, and 0.5 percent below the same time in 2011.

The Outer Banks counties of Currituck, Dare and Hyde averaged 7.5 percent for the month of June, down from 8.1 percent from the previous month, but the June figure was 0.2 percent higher than the same month in 2011.

Dare had the biggest decrease in the northeastern region from May to June of 1.2 percent to 8.7 percent. Northampton had the largest increase of 0.9 percent.

Out of a work force of 25,040 people in Dare County, 2,186 had claims for jobless benefits in June.

Currituck continued to have the lowest unemployment in North Carolina at 5.3 percent, holding steady from the previous month, while Washington County had the highest rate in the area at 11.9 percent.

    We have higher unemployment figures than last year, but our commisioners are praising and encouraging people who are assisting imported workers and considering doing more to help them. Am I missing something here?

    Bob……take away those who have found unemployment to be funemployment and those who just aren’t employable and the number would probably be quite different.
