After several days of searing temperatures nudging triple figures, a break is on the way.

A cold front moving toward the coast is forecast to stall, bringing cloudy skies but cooler temperatures for most of the week.

With unsettled conditions in the atmosphere, there will also be a good chance of thunderstorms through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Last week, temperatures in the mid- and upper-90s were the norm. On Sunday, the 99 degrees registered in Manteo was the highest temperature for July since records started being kept in 1966.

Monday will still be hot, with temperatures hitting 90 degrees and heat index values as high as 101. Chances for rain are about 50 percent.

Tuesday through Friday, temperatures will dip into the 80s, with the coolest day expected to be Wednesday, with highs around 83.

Chances for rain will be 50 to 60 percent until Friday. The weather service says we could see 1 to 2 inches Tuesday night and Wednesday.
