Currituck fire changes may drop insurance rates

| June 27, 2012

Recent changes to fire districts in Currituck County may help some homeowners save money on their insurance.

The alterations to the mainland districts of Moyock, Crawford and Lower Currituck were made to improve fire services and place as many properties within 5 miles of a station.

The Tulls Bay Colony neighborhood and properties in the 1500 to 1700 block of Caratoke Highway (N.C. 168) that were in the Moyock Fire Insurance District have been moved to the Crawford Township district.

The village of Coinjock, north of the Albemarle Chesapeake Canal, which was in the Crawford district is now in the Lower Currituck district.

Property owners should check with their insurance carriers to find out if the changes will lower their rates.

According to a news release, another factor that may affect insurance rates is whether the property is within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant.

Residents that are affected by the changes will be contacted by department or county fire representatives. Or you can call the following numbers for more information:

Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department:  232-3313
Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department:  453-2761
Moyock Volunteer Fire Department:  435-2281
Currituck County Fire Marshal:  232-6641
Currituck County Fire-EMS:  232-7746
