For the second time in less than a year, someone has been killed walking on a heavily traveled and narrow two-lane road in Moyock.

The Highway Patrol says a man in his mid-20s was killed when he was hit by a vehicle that left the scene Saturday around 5 a.m on Puddin Ridge Road.

The man’s identity has not been released, and state troopers are asking the public for help in trying to find the vehicle involved.

In December, 23-year-old Zachary Story of Moyock died after being hit by a passing motorist.

The Highway Patrol did not charge the driver of the car that struck Story, who according to family members had been at a nearby restaurant and decided to walk to his home in Wildwood Estates.

Story was wearing a camouflage jacket and blue jeans and was headed in the same direction as the car that hit him while he walked past the Quail Run neighborhood, near the same location as this past Saturday’s hit-and-run.

Puddin’ Ridge Road connects N.C. 168 to several large neighborhoods and the entrance to the former Blackwater compound, and is one of the busiest secondary roads in northern Currituck County.

I’m afraid I don’t understand. Why are the State Troopers looking for the vehicle involved if they didn’t charge the driver?

Did they not charge the driver because he wasn’t there to charge? Or what?

Widen the road. How many more deaths will it take to make it a priority?

Add a multi-use path too, if there is enough pedestrian & bike traffic. If not, just have a wide shoulder.

first incident, driver not charged-Accident. 2nd death, was hit and run, looking for driver to charge them for leaving the scene.

widening road won’t help,After seeing scene first hand that morning; Looks like 2nd victim wasn’t even in the road, but car left the road and hit him.

Best way to stop this? Troopers patrol this raod late at night for drunk drivers. Moyock churches or other community service groups offer a ‘taxi service” so folks that have to walk home can catch rides home instead.

  • MCT says:

    Jeremy,

Zachary Story was the other man who passed away in December; they didn’t charge the motorist who hit him. The article is about a man who died this week (whose identity is not being released, third paragraph), and he is associated with the driver for whom they are searching.

The whole story isn’t being told here. The problem is alcohol. If we are going to tell the story and make comments let’s call out the thing responsible for these tragic events. These death and many more can be avoided, but people don’t want address the issue. More police or wider roads aren’t going to change the problem. The fact of the matter is alcohol is responsible for more deaths of our young people than anything else. We have more under age drinking now than any other time in history. So if we are going to point finger and through blame around, let’s make sure we address the beast that is responsible.
