While the nominees for the North Carolina governor’s race were decided Tuesday, there will likely be a number of runoffs to determine the party nominees for seats on the Council of State.

Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton defeated former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, state Rep. Bill Faison, and three other candidates for the Democratic nomination for governor.

As expected, former Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory easily won the Republican race over five other candidates.

Linda Coleman has won the Democratic race for lieutenant governor, while Dan Forest is ahead of Tony Gurley and a runoff is likely.

Incumbent Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler won the Republican primary, and will be challenged by Democrat Walter Smith.

For State Treasurer, Democrat Janet Cowell will face Republican Steve Royal in November.

Other races that will likely head to a runoff this summer include those for the Republican nomination for State Auditor, Insurance Commissioner, Secretary of State and Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Democratic nomination for Commissioner of Labor.
