A second phase of the prescribed burn planned for the Bodie Island District of Cape Hatteras National Seashore began Tuesday.

The second burn unit consist of approximately 662 acres and is located west of N.C. 12, extends north of Bodie Island Lighthouse access road to south of the Navy Tower access road.

Park visitors and neighboring communities will see smoke visible in this region of the park.

During the operation, for public safety, both secondary access roads will be closed and N.C. 12 will be signed for low visibility if necessary.

As part of the Outer Banks Group Fire Management Plan, the burn will reduce fuel loading in the area as well as restore vegetative communities.

A burn was conducted Friday on approximately 1,000 acres south of the Bodie Island Lighthouse.
