Three arrested in bust of KDH meth operation
State and local law enforcement officers have charged three people with manufacturing methamphetamine after a raid in Kill Devil Hills.
Police made the arrests following an investigation of activities in a KDH motel room, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Monday.
“Information had been developed, and was confirmed through extensive surveillance that manufacturing was taking place,” the statement said.
The arrests were made in the motel room.
Deputies from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, officers from the Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head Police Departments, in conjunction with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, conducted the investigation.
Arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine were:
Sammy Pleasant Bowles Jr., 50, of Christiansburg, Va.. He was being held at the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bond.
Joseph James Forbes Jr., 41, of S. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills. He was released on $1,000 secured bond.
Beverly Lynne Howell, 43, of S. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills. She was also released on $1,000 secured bond.

$1000 bond for running a Meth Lab? What is that?
SHELVA says:
10,000 IS NOT EVEN ENOUGH LET ALONE A 1000 THAT STUFF IS BAD STUFF.
kathy rosnato says:
WTH bonds are higher than $1ooo.00 for a DWI!!!
PDQ says:
Unbelievable how low the bond is !

A Meth Lab is one of the most dangerous things you can have anywhere. If it explodes, a wide area is contaminated. Thanks to our Sheriff’s task force for getting these punks. Too bad two are back on the street.
obxdad says:
You GOTTA be kidding me! Grow one pot plant and you’ll get a $10,000 bond… and two of these guys got off with $1000 bond!?!?
Meth is the scourge of the OBX – throw the book at them.
Scott says:
What a joke! Letting them out for $1000 bond. Meth is a horrible drug this should be automatic 10 years. What the hell is wrong with the judge.
tickedoff says:
And we wonder why drugs abound in Dare Co? The judge shoud be ashamed…Hatteras Island is a mecca for any drug desired. No raids what so ever!!!
chaser says:
Crack kills ladies and gentleman…if you want to get old fast smoke meth!
OBX Resident says:
A guy gets busted in Manteo for growing 15 pot plants for personal use (maybe sharing with his friends) and gets a $10,000 bond. Three people get busted for running a meth lab in a hotel room thus exposing the guests to the threat of a chemical explosion, and manufacturing a horrible drug for sale and they get a $1,000 bond.
I hope that the $1,000 bond was a typo. $10,000 for 15 pot plants, $1,000 for a meth lab in a hotel room; are you kidding me? Who are the judges?
ekim says:
I’m sure glad this was a small operation! Meth is so nasty! I dont get the bond?
obxnana says:
I am shocked that the bond was so low.Who wants to bet they don’t show up for court?
get to work says:
I’m willing to bet the bond was set low because they weren’t operating a meth lab, they were making poor man’s meth in a hotel room. There was little chance of it blowing up and the only thing their “lab” was going to contaminate was their already contaminated bodies.
It’s like finding a crackhead cooking cocaine into a crack rock, then the local cops say they busted a crack manufacturing operation.
They busted a couple of meth heads getting a cheap fix, nothing else.

I’m fortunate to live across the street from gang members (bloods) from E. City and they deal day and night, have a dozen or more in a one BR apt. under a house and pitbulls on chains out in rain and freezing temps around the clock. Been complaining to police for close to a year now and I’m told, “these things take time”!
Beach Racer says:
Only $1,000 bonds for two of them and a $10k bond for the other one. Isn’t that kind of a joke? These thugs need to be out of our community – NOW!

You need A REALITY CHECK. Do you know the impact that Meth has had on the west coast? Do you know it has migrated west to east over the last decade at an alarming rate. Do you know the impact it’s presence has had in western NC?
It is here, and is ever increasing in lab finds across eastern NC. Whether a Mexican Cartel Lab, or a single person (or 3) cooking in a small room, it is a very dangerous and volatile procedure. Once made it is highly addictive and given free to start a client base.
Stop with the negativity about the arrests. It is a good thing it was found and stopped. God knows how many people have already been introduced to it from this one motel room.
God help those addicted, and God bless those who try to stop it.

All kids should visit Faces of Meth online as a deterrent. I hope the D.A.R.E. people are making it part of their regular curriculum. These lovely mug shots look like classic cases.
