More erosion control needed for temporary bridge
The N.C. Department of Transportation says one lane at the bridge will be temporarily closed beginning Wednesday, daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Crews will begin by realigning the guardrails along N.C. 12 at the bridge in order to bring in a crane for a majority of the work.
Large stones and additional retaining walls will be placed at the south end of the bridge in order prevent erosion.
The work is expected to take between four and six weeks to complete.
Motorists are asked to use caution when traveling in the area, and flaggers will be on hand to assist with traffic control.

With no big Northeasters yet,we already have major erosion.Might want to think about Lengthening the bridge,NCDOT.
Ottoman says:
What? Now they are spending money to “prevent” erosion which would eventually close the inlet….this is sand on a sand bar. Where is the geologist that should have said that this inlet would move with the current! If your going to do that just bulldoze it shut at slack tide. Its SAND….I thought NC did not allow “permanet” structures. I thought this was a temporary bridge. Think people!

Duh
oislander says:
Funny how locals here on OI predicted back in September and October that this very issue would occur. Why don’t our illustrious government officials ever ask or listen to those folks who have lived here for decades? Many don’t have college educations, but it appears that life lessons are more accurate these days!
Native son says:
The waters go where they want, and the south end of the bridge was a secondary breach that was filled back in to land the bridge on,now the water wants it back.Go figure.
