A fire Monday night destroyed an oceanfront vacation home in the 1200 block of Atlantic Avenue in the Ocean Hill neighborhood of Corolla, while a house next door suffered minor damage.

Corolla Fire and Rescue Chief Rick Galganski said what caused the fire has not been determined.

Galganski says the house, which had been undergoing renovations, was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived minutes after it was reported at 9:53 p.m.

The blaze was brought under control about 30 minutes after they arrived.

A house next door suffered minor heat damage to its exterior, according to Galganski.

An estimated 40 personnel from Corolla, Carova Beach, and Duck fire departments responded to the fire.

Well done. Both the house and the job. There is no better pure public service than fire fighting.
