Wright Brothers visitor center reopens after fire

| July 20, 2011

The visitor center at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills reopened Saturday after a small fire in a heating and air conditioning component earlier in the week.

Staff and visitors were evacuated when the mid-morning fire was discovered Wednesday, the National Park Service said in a statement, and there were no injuries.

The fire was in the motor of an air-handling unit. The Kill Devil Hills and Colington Volunteer fire departments responded.

“The building where the fire occurred will require clean up and repair of damage and debris and a thorough assessment of the condition of cultural artifacts, the statement said. “The building is expected to be reopened in several days.”

The rest of the park, including the Wright Brothers Pavilion with interpretive
exhibits, remained open.
