Pennsylvania couple drowns in Nags Head

A couple from Littlestown, Pa., drowned Friday after stepping off a sandbar in South Nags Head, police reported.

Nags Head police said Benjamin Howe, 54, and his wife, Debra Sue Greene, 56, were unable to return to shore, but there was no evidence of rip currents and waves were moderate.

The drowning at 1:15 p.m. was off the beach in the 8400 block of South Oregon Inlet Road, police said in a statement.

They were brought onto the beach and given CPR, the statement said. Dare County Emergency Services took them to The Outer Banks Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

Earlier this week, the body of a 19-year-old Gloucester, Va., man was found near Oregon Inlet. He was reported missing after going into the water near the campground. On Aug. 13, a Vermont man drowned in Kill Devil Hills.
