Decals to be required for Nags Head debris yard

Public Works Department officials were given the OK to require decals on vehicles bringing material to the yard after telling town commissioners that an unusually large amount of debris was being dumped.
In a request to the Board of Commissioners for a permitting system, the staff wrote that there was no other explanation than that people from outside of town were dumping brush and bulky items.
There were also suspicions that a lot of material was coming from commercial operations, such as landscaping companies.
Public works staffers expressed concerns that with the peak of the hurricane season approaching, there would be nowhere to put debris if a serious storm hit the Outer Banks.
The yard is at 2211 South Lark Avenue off 8th Street near the Kill Devil Hills line.
Decals will be free to residents and property owners and will be available at Town Hall.
The hours of the yard are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
