Employment numbers strong in Dare and Currituck

| July 22, 2010

The unemployment rate in Dare County is now one of the lowest in the state, dropping to 6.9 percent in June, the North Carolina Employment Security Commission reports.

Dare had the fifth lowest rate in the state, while Currituck County recorded the lowest at 4.8 percent.

Both bucked a statewide trend in which rates in 45 of the state’s 100 counties went up.

Dare’s rate was 8.1 percent in May. The statewide unemployment rate was 10 percent in June, down slightly from the 10.4 percent in May.

Seasonal employment historically drives down Dare County’s rate in the summer. In the winter, unemployment peaked at more than 17 percent.

The numbers do not include independent contractors who are out of work or under-employed, nor do they count people who have given up looking.

Scotland County, at 16.3 percent, had the highest unemployment in the state, followed by Edgecombe at 15 percent.

  • The Taxpayer says:

Sadly, the failed economic policies of the Obama Administration and those of Bev Purdue and her Democratic allies will cause the unemployment rate to spike as soon as the season ends. Any improvement can be directly attributed to our tourism based economy. Until we see a real change in Washington (& Raleigh) we’re on a collision course with economic disaster.
