Daredevils drop another to Wilson Tobs
By Bryan Holland
The Outer Banks Daredevils (2-8) fell to the visiting Wilson Tobs (7-2) on Saturday evening at First Flight Baseball Complex by a score of 2-1.
The Tobs struck first in the top of the second when catcher Matt Zeblo (Belmont University) led off the frame with a single and was driven home by an RBI single off the bat of RF Jacob Davis (East Carolina University).
In the fifth, Davis, who ended up with 2 for 4 at the plate, scored on a single by Matt Johns (Western Carolina University).
The Daredevils would get one run in the last of the seventh as third-baseman Travis Feiner (UNLV) launched a solo home run over the left-field wall, the first round-tripper of the 2010 season at First Flight Baseball Complex.
The Tobs were lifted by eight innings of work from right-hander Jeff Brown (Kennesaw State University), who gave up just one earned run on three hits, while striking out eight. Brown, who entered the game without allowing a walk in nine innings pitched, did not issue a walk to the Daredevils, expanding that streak to 17 innings.
Brown was Saturday’s winning pitcher (1-0). Daredevils right-hander John Cornely (Wofford College) delivered a quality start, pitching six innings and allowing two runs, one of them earned, on five hits, walking one and striking out eight Tobs batters. Cornely was the losing pitcher and fell to (0-2) on the 2010 slate.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Tobs called on right-hander Brennan Dobbins (University of Central Florida), who earned his first save of the season.
The Daredevils host the Peninsula Pilots at 7:05 today at First Flight Baseball Complex.
