Walmart expansion plan includes a grocery store

Plans for a 35,000-square-foot expansion of Walmart have been endorsed by the Kitty Hawk Planning Board, according to the town manager’s newsletter.

The expansion would include about 29,000 square feet of retail and storage space and a 6,000-square-foot garden center, Town Manager John Stockton reported in the weekly newsletter. The new space would include a grocery store.

Stockton said the existing outdoor garden center would be removed and loading docks would be relocated to the rear of the building.

Still to be resolved are issues concerning state building and fire codes related to the property line between the Walmart site and the rest of the shopping center, Stockton said. Engineers for Walmart presented plans to address them, Stockton said.

The site plan approved by the planning board will be considered by the Town Council April 6.

Harris Teeter recently opened its third store on the Outer Banks next door to Walmart. A Food Lion is across the street.
