In the race for sheriff, incumbent Democrat Rodney Midgett will be challenged by J.D. “Doug” Doughtie of Kill Devil Hills or Ryan White of Rodanthe, who will face off in the Republican primary.

In November, Democrat Robin Mann will try to unseat Republican Jack Shea for the at-large Dare County Board of Commissioners seat.

Meanwhile, state Senate President Marc Basnight, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Hood Richardson of Washington for the 1st District Senate seat. Republican Bob Steinburg of Edenton has filed to run against incumbent state Rep. Tim Spear, a Democrat.
