Power project caused outage

Work on replacing power poles along U.S. 158 was the cause of a Charter Cable outage that lasted as long as six hours Tuesday for customers in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk, according to a Charter spokesman.

Jim Corrin, director of government relations, said a contractor for Dominion Power sliced through a major fiber optic line. Underground utilities are supposed be flagged before construction work is done, but the two utilities are differing on whether it was done properly in this case.

Corrin said it was. “Unfortunately, the contractor cut us anyway,” he said.

But Chuck Penn, a spokesman for Dominion, said most of the Charter lines had been marked except the one that was cut.

“It was not appropriately marked,” he said.

The outage occurred at 3:30 p.m and service started coming back at 9:30 p.m., Corrin said.

Affected customers can call 1-888-438-2427 to discuss receiving a credit for the lost service, he said.

My cable/phone/internet didn’t come on until at least 9:30 the following morning! Pretty big bummer.

Unfortunately for some of us the cable was out for much longer. Ours went out around 3:05 Tuesday and it was restored around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. I think Charter should credit all customers affected and Dominion Power should reimburse Charter!

I took my Charter bill in hand and walked into their office. Paid my bill and got a promise of a credit for one day of outage on my next bill.
